Feeling "Whelmed", Not Giving Up

Friends, things are busy in Homegirl land. Crazy, insane, unreal busy. But I am not complaining. Actually, at this moment I am feeling incredibly blessed and overwhelmingly lucky. Although overwhelmed is a word I have decided to ban from my vocabulary. When it's used in the negative sense, that is. I am so tired of that word. I feel like it just calls people to inaction. It's one thing to feel like it's impossible, but still move forward and eat that elephant, one bite at a time. It's another to say forget it, I'm not even trying. So now instead of overwhelmed I am saying I'm "whelmed" so I actually take that first bite.

Check out these awesome Sesame Street videos. Yes, Sesame Street. Will.i.am sings a song about having a dream and never quitting, believing in yourself, not letting anything bring you down and getting stronger in that dream. So fitting for me these days.

And Bruno Mars' is about not giving up and trying to reach your goals, no matter how hard they seem to attain.

Both messages are super relevant to me right now. Everyone goes through periods like this, so you may be there with me at this moment. If you have a kiddo or two, grab your sweeties and watch these videos together. I think adults and children alike can learn a thing or two from them.

Mission Small Business

I am taking part in Chase and Living Social's Mission Small Business contest. The prize is a grant of $250,000 and it would be HUGE for Homegirl. I love that these big companies have made it a priority to foster the growth of small businesses.

Judging by your awesome response to the GMC Trade Secrets contest, I think we have a real shot! Just head to www.missionsmallbusiness.com. You'll have to log in with your Facebook account and then type in Homegirl to search for my business. There's also a Homegirl, Inc. competing, so make sure you choose the correct one! :) This could be amazing for our little business. Thanks so much for your support!

Fox 8 News Cleveland

Hello to new friends coming to my blog from the Fox 8 News segment I just completed. I had a blast with Kristi Capel, talking with her about repurposing items you might have around the house, or ones that are easy to acquire, for summer plantings and decor. And even though my head was behind a fern for half the segment :) I was glad to have the opportunity to show you some of the fun ways you can make a statement in your home.

Ready to go on air
The view from the control room - too cool!
Chatting with Kristi Capel
After my segment, they asked me to do a tip on the fly about decorating your workspace!
If you are interested in making your own scrap wreath like the one I shared this morning, click here for a quick video tutorial.

Thanks for checking out my blog!

Super Summer Sale!

Photos from my Summer Sale!! Loved it! Such cool stuff we had, great weather and lots and lots of enthusiastic shoppers, which I am so grateful for - thank you so much everyone!! Highlights of pics - art on barn doors: metal owls, hearts, and flower were made from roofing materials found in hurricane debris. "Be True" sign made from found objects. Love the saying! Porcelain Fish - I almost could not sell. It was one of my favorites, although I find myself saying that a lot...  Also, check out the gears in the rock garden. They look like they are exactly where they should be. More pictures to come!

Folk Magazine

I just learned about this really cool magazine - Folk. Am I behind on this? Did you all already know about it? Anyway, I came across it and was totally knocked out.

Folk is all about "real American" living without being stereotypical. They focus on the things that make America special, including indie music, antiques, road rips, small towns, artists, locally grown and locally made, supporting main streets, etc. The magazine is out of Beaver Dam, Kentucky, a small town of 3,500. This isn't some big, fancy operation out of New York. These people are keeping it real!

On their blog they just did a montage of barns across the country. As you know, I am a fan of barns. I love the history they represent as well as the future they can hold inside. Check out some of these sweet images from Folk.

I can't believe I am just finding out about Folk. If you haven't ever heard of it, check out their blog. You will find some amazing pictures. I think you'll really like it.

The Snail Trail - VW Buses

I am a HUGE fan of VW buses. I have a dream that some day I will own one and I'll travel all over in my pimped out ride. Until then, I can drool at these cool VWs by The Snail Trail. The Snail Trail is an English company that sells and rents some really awesome VWs. They give each bus a woman's name, which is incredibly adorable. Check out the bright, beautiful colors on some of the girls.

And come ON! How sweet is this caravan named Constance? I could have so much fun camping in this cutie.

You know I'd go crazy decorating the inside of one of those busses if I ever got my hands on one. A girl can dream...

This was how I felt before you started lining up.

My Homegirls (and Terry!) were ready for action.

And then I saw this - what a beautiful sight - and I started feeling much much better (picture courtesy of shopper Phil Chalmers)!
